Interested students should complete the Study Abroad Application (available online or from Michael Peil, Associate Dean for International Programs) and return it to Michael Peil no later than the second Monday in February. Questions about any of these programs or about the study-abroad program generally should also be directed to Michael Peil.

University of KwaZulu-Natal
Formed by the 2004 merger of the University of Durban-Westville and the University of Natal, UKZN is one of the premier public universities in South Africa. Its predecessor, the University of Natal, opened its law school in 1910, making this Faculty of Law one of the oldest in South Africa. The Faculty of Law consists of two law schools: (1) the Howard College School of Law on the Durban campus, and (2) the Pietermaritzburg School of Law at Pietermaritzburg. Our exchange is with the Howard College School of Law.
The Howard College School of Law was established in 1926 and has a record of having provided its students with justice education and clinical legal training for nearly 30 years. Although it has a number of strengths, the Law School is probably best known for its clinical legal education. In 1973 the school hosted the first Legal Aid Conference ever held in South Africa, which became the catalyst for a national clinical movement in the country. In the same year, immediately after the Conference, Professor David McQuoid-Mason founded the school's Campus Law Clinic to provide legal services for disenfranchised poor. In 1978 the school became the first in the country to give academic credit for a clinical law course.
