Celebrating 50 Years of Teaching
"Many of you know of my affection for Italia and its people. My favorite proverb, which I first heard as a toast, is: Quando si trovi un amico, poi si trovi un Tesoro. When one finds a friend, then one finds a treasure. I look out at you tonight and I am humbled by the sight of so many friends and the knowledge that many others wanted to join us. I look out at my friends tonight and I know this much. I have had the good fortune and privilege to serve this great University and especially this Law School for nearly fifty years, and I know that it would not have been as good and as fortunate anywhere else or at any combination of other schools. Am I the luckiest man on the face of the earth? Perhaps not. I am certain, however, that my six thousand students have made me rich beyond measure with the many treasures they have conferred. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you have given to me. You have my love and gratitude forever."
